The 11th Annual Chinese Culture Day was held on April 8, 2022, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Hawaii time. It was hosted by the Chinese Section and Chinese Flagship Center of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures of the University of Hawai‘i, the Chinese Immersion Program of Maryknoll School, the Center for Chinese Studies of the University of Hawai‘i, and Chinese Language Education Association of Hawai‘i, and was held in the central courtyard of the Biomed Building on the University of Hawai‘i’s Mānoa campus. The event attracted more than 150 participants from the University of Hawai‘i, Maryknoll School and the community. The purpose of the event was to allow Chinese language learners to experience aspects of Chinese culture in a fun setting.

The Chinese Cultural Day showcased a variety of activities, including a Taijiquan lesson, practice in Chinese calligraphy, tying Chinese knots, making paper lanterns, sampling Chinese tea, enjoying the guqin (Chinese zither), tying your hair into a Chinese bun, challenging yourself at the Chinese yoyo etc. In addition, in order to closely integrate Culture Day with the students’ Chinese learning, the organizers also prepared mini-games focusing on Chinese measure words, radicals, and cultural information. These fun and knowledgeable activities enabled students to learn new skills and consolidate classroom content in a relaxed atmosphere, and were well-received by participants.

Each participant received a “passport” with a printed list of all activities. When the students participated in each activity, they received a stamp by the name of the activity; when the “passport” was filled, the students received a small gift, such as a papercut, an embroidered bag, a key ring with cultural fob, a postcard of a famous site, etc.
This event was a cautious foray back into the public sphere after the pandemic lockdown. The organizers and sponsors had to work harder than in the past to keep everyone safe, and the results were gratifying. All participants expressed satisfaction and left feeling pleased. We look forward to next spring in beautiful Mānoa valley, when even more fun and exciting activities will be scheduled!
