Memorial Service for CLEAH Member Nathan Yaohua Yan

Friday April 5, 2024: Nathan Yaohua Yan held bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from the East China Normal University in Shanghai. He came to Hawai‘i as a visiting scholar in 1991 and went on to earn an MA from the UHM College of Education, before taking up a position teaching Special Education in the Department of Education. He worked for ten years with the UH Center for Disabilities Studies, and accepted a position in 2023 as an Academic Support Specialist with the UH Center for Chinese Studies. He died on February 19, 2024. Two of his three elder sisters spoke movingly at his memorial service, which was attended by many of his colleagues from UHM, fellow members of CLEAH, and friends and neighbors in Honolulu.
